PREFACE.
This Index gives reference to about 3500 Wills, contained in 43 bundles. The early part from 1715 to 1720 contains very few Wills, and all those previous to that date were destroyed by fire some time ago. In the Minute- Book at the end of the year 1741 the following note is inserted : —
" The foregoing Minute-Book, consisting of this and the 60 preceding pages, being compared with all the confirmed Testaments that were in the Commissary of Aberdeen's Office when Alexander Innes was admitted Commissary Clerk, was found right, and all the foregoing Inventories were in the said office except the following, viz. : — Two Inventories of the Earl of Aberdeen of 12 Nov. 1722 and 2 July 1723: Eik, Inventory of Mr. James Kennedy, Minister at Peterculter, 18 June 1724 : Item, of Alexander Thomson of Portlethen of 29 Oct. 1730 : Item, Mr. William Thain of Blackhall, 24 Oct. 1735 : Item, James Irvine, advocate in Aber- deen, 23 June 1738 ; and Robert French, litster in Aberdeen, 27 Nov. 1739. But for Mr. William Thain's and Robert French's Inventories there were receipts of Alexander Gordon and John French ; and in testimony thereof the Commissary hath signed these presents at Aberdeen
10 Sept. 1742.
