TRANSCRIBED, EDITED AND INDEXED BY
Rev. Prof. C. E. WHITING

PRIVATELY PRINTED FOR THE YORKSHIRE PARISH REGISTER SOCIETY

MADE AND PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN BY JOHN WHITEHEAD AND SON, LTD., BOAR LANE, LEEDS
P R E F A C E
The parish registers of St. Wilfrid's, Hickleton, down to 1694 have been lost for many years. In the seventeenth cen- tury, however, it was customary to send to York lists of the baptisms, marriages and burials for each year. Some of these, written on pieces of parchment, still exist in the Diocesan Registry at York, and are here printed in the first nine pages. The registers now^ existing are in two volumes. The first is a parchment volume in greenish-grey card-board covers with a leather back. It contains twenty parchment leaves, of which eleven pages are blank. On the front cover a square sheet of white paper is pasted, inscribed
Ibicl^letou 1Rcai0ter6 beouu in 1694
Inside the front cover is the following: " Mem: By an Act of Parliam* pass'd in the Year of our Lord 1751, and 24,^^ Year of the Reign of George 2<3, it was enacted (amongst other things) that the Year should for the future commence on the pt Day of January, and all Writings, whether Ecclesiastical or Civil, sh^ be dated according to this Regula- tion .... That 11 Days sh'^ be omitted in Sepr 1752, and the new Stile take place on the 14^^ Day of the said Month &c."
This volume contains the entries of Baptisms from May 3nth. 1694, to Nov. 18th, 1812; Marriages from 1695 to Feb. 13th, 1753; and Burials from April 18th, 1694, to June 28th, 1812.
The second is a leather-bound volume containing paper leaves, and is the official form of register of marriages provided for use in churches and chapels in accordance with the Act of 26 George II to prevent clandestine marriages. This volume contains the Marriage entries from May 6th, 1755, to June 28th, 1811.
vi PREFACE
These registers contain very little of special interest except some valuable information about the alterations and improve- ments made in the church by Charles, first Viscount, and Charles Lindley, second Viscount Halifax.
In pencil, opposite the first page of Marriages in the first volume, is written —
19 Feb. 1720 John Towning=f-Patience Ellison
Mary, Anne, Susan,
21 Sept. 1731 14 Dec. 1735 7 Feb. 1737-8
Under 1694 and 1699 there are references to tombstones in the churchyard. That of Robert Stead and Elizabeth his wife (1694) is one of four flat stones in a row, all illegible now. That of William Johnson, a table stone near the east end of the church, is still readable with difficulty.
