Urbana, Wik Sept 2a 906: This is to certify that the growing Nursery stock and premises or THE DUNDEE NURSERDPES (rill), situated at Dundee mie have been inspected by Eugene V. Bronson, a duly appointed in- spector of this office, according to the provisions of an act to prevent the introduction and spread in Illinois of the San Jose scale, and other dangerous insects and contagious diseases of fruits, approved and in force April 11, 1899, and that no indications have been found of the presence of the San Jose scale or other dangerous insect or plant disease. This certificate applies only to the condition of this nursery for the period ending June 1, 1907. | S. A. FORBES, State Entomologist. ¢? v We Issue a Large Illustrated Catalog, Giving Prices on All Large Size Trees. Q} Thirty-two Years in the Nursery Business. In entering upon my 32nd year in the nursery work, I wish to thank my many friends and patrons who have made. it possible for the business to grow. We have tried to uphold an honorable policy in all of our business dealings. We are this season better than ever prepared to handle your business. THIS CATALOG. This catalog is my agent. Read this description and examine the prices. We aim to describe the stock which we offer for saleinatruthful manner. Ii you do not find what you want, write to us and we will get it for you. If there is anything in connection with sizes and prices that does not seem clear, let us know, we are only too willing to explain. We want your business, we know we can please you. Give us a trial. All we ask is a chance. Our stock has pleased others, and it will please you. Seed Beds. This is the Way We Shade Little Plants While They are Growing from Seeds. A WORD ABOUT OUR STOCK. Don’t compare our nursery-grown stock with wild trees. We grow our stock from seeds. Some varieties are started from cuttings, while some of the choice varieties are carefully grafted in the greenhouse. Nursery grown stock is healthy. It is grown with an abundance of light. The parts form properly. Did you ever see stock sent out by some nurseryman, stock that was long and slender and very light, with only one long, straight root? Such trees are found wild in the woods. Nursery grown trees are not long and slim and light. Their roots have been made to grow and develop by being frequently transplanted. This stock when taken from our nursery rows and shipped to the purchaser, will grow. It has a stock of feeding roots that will 2 DUNDEE NURSERIES take hold when planted out, and put new life and vigor into the plant. Now choose for yourself which kind of stock you would rather have. e HARDINESS. Thirty-two years in the nursery: business has taught us that people de- mand hardy stock. Such trees and plants as will stand out unprotected during © the long winter months, and not suffer from the effects. Trees that will not only live through the winter, but will be ready to start growing again when the warm spring day appears. People don’t want stock that will be frozen back and partly killed every winter. Such trees don’t give results, and it is money wasted to buy such stock. We grow hardy stock, and experience has taught us which varieties are best adapted to the different parts of the country. We have made it our business to find out which of our trees give the best results in the different states all over the country. If you don’t know, and are undecided, ask us. It is our business to know, and we are only too glad to tell you. PACKING. The digging and packing of nursery stock is as interesting as knowing how to grow it. Have you ever received a box of trees, either fruit or ever- greens, and did the stock look fine? Yes, all except the roots; they were cut short off just below the ground. The trees, no matter how strong and healthy, could not live with their roots cut so short. Therefore we try to impress upon our customers the importance of having your stock properly handled. Our stock is all carefully dug. If the trees come to the packing shed with their roots gone, they are thrown out. The man who dug the tree is asked to explain. There is no excuse for stock being spoiled in the above manner. Some one is at fault and our foreman sees to it that such mistakes do not often occur. After digging comes the packing. Our packers are all old and experienced hands, who have packed our plants for many years. The stock must be properly packed so as to arrive in a fresh, healthy condition. We use moss, lots of it, damp moss that will keep the roots from getting dry. We cleat the trees firmly into place so there won’t be the slightest chance for them to come leose and shake about. Years of experience have taught us the best and most practical methods- and every shipment is packed under the direct supervision of a competent foreman. - WE FURNISH PACKING MATERIAL AND BOXING FREE OF CHARGE. We do not guarantee that all our trees will live, neither do we assume the responsibility after shipment has been placed in the railroad company’s care. We do guarantee that all stock will be of the true variety and of the quality described. Mistakes will occur. Although we use every possible care, we ask that you call our attention to the same upon arrival of the stock, that immediate attention may be given. PRICES. We welcome a comparison of prices. Our stock is sold direct to you. We pay no agents’ commission. You get the first and only price we quote. DUNDEE NURSERIES 3 Remember you are buying nursery grown stock, and do not compare it with wild trees pulled out of the woods and along river banks. Our prices are low, very low in fact, when you consider the quality of our stock. Our prices are low because we sell stock in large quantities. We grow evergreens by the million, and quick sales at reasonable figures has always been our policy. TERMS OF PAYMENT. All orders must be accompanied by cash, bank draft, express money order or postal money-order. Register your letters containing money. It is not safe to send them through the mail unless this is done. Stock is furnished as follows: 5 at 10 rates; 50 at 100 rates; 500 at 1,000 rates. Remember, we fur- nish boxes, packing, moss, burlap, twine, paper, etc., free of charge and de- livered to the station, after which our responsibility ceases. FREIGHT OR EXPRESS. Be sure to state the manner in which you wish your goods shipped, by freight or express. We use our own judgment when not advised by the pur- chaser: — FIFTY GREAT BARGAINS. We send out with every catalog one of our “special bargain sheets.” We have for a number of years offered our customers these bargain lots. They are all of best quality stock. Look them over, they will interest you if you intend buying trees. Our careful selection of stock has tnade a reputation for the Dundee Nursery. We will uphold this good name by giving our cus- tomers first-class, carefully-selected stock and fair and honest treatment. We are never too busy but that we can find time to give your questions our care- ful attention. It is a pleasure for us to give you the knowledge of our ex- perience that has taught us. PLANTING EVERGREENS. The proper time for planting evergreens is in the springtime after the ground has become warm and mellow, or again in the fall after the season’s growth has matured. Unpack your-trees as soon as they arrive and plant them as. soon as possible. Do not expose the roots to the sun and wind. If the weather and soil are dry, water well after planting, tramp the soil firmly about the roots. TREES FOR EVERY PURPOSE. We grow trees for every purpose. Read our description in the catalog and you will see the kinds we recommend for every purpose. Some kinds are grown for windbreaks,.some for hedge fence and others for lawn planting. All are hardy and free from blight. We offer for sale seedlings and trans- planted trees. Seedlings are the young trees still in the seed beds; transplanted are those which have been taken out and replaced either once, twice or three times. Transplanting develops root growth, and makes a stronger, heavier-shaded tree. EVERGREENS: ABIES (The Fir). Balsam Fir, for wind-break and shelter shield. Always hardy and a rapid grower. Everybody is acquainted with the White Pine. This fine tree grows all over the world. It never gets too cold for the White Pine, and it is the fast- est grower of all the evergreens, some White Pines grow 3 and 4 feet in a single season. We sell millions of these trees every year.- We grow them in all sizes from three inches tall up to a big, heavy tree 7 feet high. Our stock of White Pines is fine, so fine, in fact, that we do not think that you can buy stock from any other nursery that will equal our trees. Thrifty, stocky plants with plenty of roots. That’s why they grow, because they’ve got the roots. We transplant our stock and give it room to grow. Don’t compare this stock with trees grown thick and crowded, until they have grown tall and slim, and have such poor roots that they could not possibly live when replanted. We don’t grow our stock like that, we give the trees room, they are trans- planted and root pruned, and they live and grow when planted out. That’s our specialty, growing hardy evergreens. Plant the White Pine anywhere, it is good enough to grow on any lawn, and for wind-break it can’t be beat.
