WHE PROPRIETOR, having devoted many years to horticulture in its | h several departments, feels confident in his ability to select from the
——— vast and confusing list of seeds such species and varieties only as are really worthy of cultivation, to the exclusion of all the various sorts that are not adapted to our climate, but which are too frequently recommended and sold, to the serious loss and disappointment of planters.
As the profession has always been pursued with a view to a permanent business, great care is taken to preserve an unsullied reputation, by having supplies of all the leading kinds of seeds raised annually by careful growers, from roots or seeds selected by the proprietor. Such seeds as are not suc- cessfully grown in our climate are imported from the most reliable seedsmen in Europe. The purity and germinating qualities of all important seeds are tested each year, under his personal supervision.
The observance of such a system may be considered as a guarantee that no seeds will be offered except such as are known to possess the most es- sential good qualities for general purposes.
To aid the amateur and others in making selections, some of the leading and most desirable kinds are marked with an asterisk, thus (h):
The proprietor can here only enumerate the leading articles in his collec- tion; and from a conviction that the seedsman’s fair reputation is often un- justly defamed through failure of seeds, he would with brevity state some of the causes: |
first—That some cultivators, through ignorance or forgetfulness of the fact that the products of a garden are natives of various soils and climates, and require peculiar management, sow their seeds at an improper season. To aid such the most tender species, which should not be placed in the open ground until settled warm weather, are marked thus (+). The half-hardy, which are subject to risk if sown when frosts prevail, are marked thus (f). The early and most hardy species and varieties should not be planted until the ground can be brought into good condition, as some species of plants that in an advanced state of growth will stand a hard winter are often cut off by a very slight frost while young, especially if exposed to the heat of the sun after a frosty night. To guard against disappointment, reserve some of the seed for a later sowing.
Second—That some species of seeds, such as Beans, Beet, Cabbage, Lettuce, Radish, Salsify, Turnip, etc., being from their nature apt to vegetate quickly, are often liable to be devoured by insects within forty-eight hours after they are sown, and before a plant is seen above ground, unless a suitable remedy is applied in time to destroy them.

Third—That some species, such as Carrot, Celery, Leek, Onion, Parsley, Parsnip, Spinach, etc., being naturally of tardy growth—taking (in unfavorable seasons) from two to four weeks to vegetate—are apt to perish through incrus- tation of the soil, or other circumstances which cannot always be controlled.
Fourth—That failures often occur through seed being deposited too deep in the ground, or left too near the surface; sometimes, for want of sufficient seed in a given spot, solitary plants perish, lacking strength to open the pores of the earth; and very often injudicious management in manuring and preparing the soil will cause failures.
To insure a fair chance, plant your seed moderately thick, and thin out the surplus plants while young.
In planting seeds in drills (which is the most desirable plan), the size of the seed and strength of its germ should be considered; large seeds, pro- ducing vigorous roots, require deeper planting than diminutive seeds pro- ducing delicate roots and slender stalks; the smallest seeds should not be covered more than a quarter of an inch.

Novelties and Specialties in FLOWER SEEDS.
ASTER.
Comet, Snow-White. The flowers of this splendid new class are very large and extremely double, with incurved petals, giving them the appearance of the finest Japanese chrysan- themums. Pkt. 25 cts.
Ball, or Jewel. (Benary.) A magnificent rose and white variety. The flowers are very double, petals incurved; blooms in great profusion. Pkt. 25 cts.
Snowball, or Princess. (Benary.) Flowers pure white; in form they are semi-spherical, and

Aquilegia Stuarti.
A splendid Columbine, the result of a cross between A. glandulosa and 4, Wilmanni. The flowers are 4 inches in diameter, and are of a fine, rich blue. Pkt. 25 cts.
.Cockscomb. ‘ Vesuvius.’’ , This novelty is the result of careful cultivation extending over a period of many years.

yellow ground. As the comb is formed not so dense as the other varieties of Cockscomb, the grand contrast between the golden ground and the fiery red upper part of the combcomes to effectual presentation, and the effect of this wonderful coloring is brought to the highest perfection by a line of fiery gold which runs over the whole length of the head. The peculiar beauty of this new Cockscomb is seen the best in full sunshine, where the flower much resembles a blaze. Cineraria grandiflora kermesina.
A new semi-double hybrid vari- ety. The flowers are of an intense, dark crimson, and average 2% inches across. Pkt. 50 cts.
Dianthus Caryophyllus f1. pl. ‘+ Margaret.’’
A new class of perpetual bloom- ing Carnations, producing over 80 per cent. of double flowers, and of many striking colors. The plants x = are vigorous, and grow about 12 == SSS SS inches high. Pkt. 25 cts. Comet Aster.

Datura cornucopia (‘‘Horn of Plenty.’’)
The singular form, gigantic size, striking colors and pleasant odor of the flower make this
novelty most conspicu- ous. The plant is of a very robust habit. The stem is thick, dark brown-purple, shining as if varnished. The branches are very nu- merous, spreading sym- metrically 3 or 4 feetin every direction. The leaves are large, of a dark green color. The flowers are trumpet- shaped, measuring 8 to Io inches in length and 5 to 7 inches across the mouth, and form three distinct flowers growing each within the other, the throat and mouth of the corolla a most delicate French white, beautifully contrasted and marbled with royal purple on the outside. Gaillardia, Perfec= tion.
The finest strain of ‘this standard summer- flowering plant. For table bouquets, etc., this flower has no su- perior. Pkt. 20 cts.
Gloxinia, Emperor Frederick.
Flowers erect, and average 3% inches in diameter. Foliage emerald-green; color bright scarlet to nearly the base of the throat, and edged with a pure white band. Pkt. 50 cts.
Hibiscus, Crimson Eye. (New.)
A robust grower, with dark red, stems and foliage. The flowers are of immense size, often measuring 20 inches in circumference. The color is of the purest white, with a large spot of deep, velvety crimson in the center of each flower. It will succeed anywhere, and is perfectly hardy, blooming the first year from seed sown in the open ground. Pkt. 15 cts.
Lobelia erinus Compacta ‘: Goldelse.’’
This grand novelty, with its golden yellow foliage and deep blue flowers, makes a contrast of charming beauty. Pkt. 20 cts.
Mignonette, Improved Victoria. This novelty, which grows about 6 inches high, will put every lover of flowers in ecstasy by its perfectly regular, pyramidal habit, and elegantly formed spikes, which are profusely covered with pretty, brilliant réd flowers; valuable for pot culture. Pkt. 20 cts.

Glaucum. (Tulip Poppy.) The plant of this splendid annual grows from 12 to 14 inches high and produces, well above the foliage, 50 to 60 large and splendid flowers of the most vivid scarlet imaginable. Pkt. Io cts.
Cardinal Poppy. (Benary.) A new class of this popular border annual. Flowers extra large and double. Brilliant scarlet on white ground. Pkt. ro cts.

Novelties and Specialties in VEGETABLE SEEDS.
Asparagus, Columbian Mammoth White.
This variety is a sport from Conover’s Colossal. It produces pure white shoots, and requires no artificial blanching. It isa strong grower, and comes remarkably true from seed. Oz. 15 cts., Ib. $1.50.
BEANS.
Dreer’s Bush Lima. Of vigorous, bushy habit, growing from 1% to 2 feet high, and producing pods in great abundance; the Beans grow close together in the pods, and are very thick, sweet and succulent. Ot. 40 cts.
Improved Golden Wax Bush. New; very early and distinct. The pods are of a rich golden color, entirely free from spot or rust, and are of excellent quality. Qt. 30 cts.
Canadian Wonder Bush. The pods are flat and green in color. Excellent asa snap Bean, and one of the best for cooking when ripe. Ot. 30 cts.
Beet, Extra Early Eclipse.
The tops are very small; roots smooth and globe-shaped; flesh deep crimson, very fine grained, and remarkably sweet. Oz. to cts., lb. 75 cts.
Cabbage, Early Winnigstadt.
A standard sure-heading, second-early variety ; very reliable; it heads well on light soils, where large-growing sorts often fail, and makes a good late sort for delayed plantings. O2025'cts., lb: §2.
Carrot, Half-Long Red Carentan.
A new slender-growing variety ; very short top, entirely without core; useful for forcing. Oz.15 cts., lb. $1.
Cauliflower, Erfurt Extra Early Dwarf.
The best for forcing and general purposes as an early variety; hardy, dwarf and compact, with solid white heads of superior quality. Original pkt. 50 cts.
Celery, Giant Pascal.
This new variety is the result of careful selection from the well-known ‘‘Golden Self-Blanching’”’ Celery. It par- takes of the nutty flavor of that excellent variety; and in taste is not at all bitter or astringent. It grows about 2 feet high, with stalks that are solid, crisp, not stringy, very large, and broader than those of any other. Before blanching it is green, with heart of golden yellow and very full. It is very easily blanched, requiring only five or six days’ earthing-up, while its preservative qualities make it a fine shipper. & For jate winter use. Oz, 25 cts.
Corn, Champion Sweet.
New. ‘This Corn is, without doubt. the earliest large Corn ever introduced. Ears nearly as targe as the. Mammoth, _ with a medium-sized white cob; kernels plump, pearly white, very sweet, tender and fullof milk. Qt. 25 cts.

Cucumber, Tailby’s Hybrid.
White Spined crossed with an English frame variety. It grows larger than White Spined, and is one of the most valuable in its class for open-air cultivation. Oz. 15 cts., lb. gr.
Lettuce, Buttercup.
A cabbage variety ; excellent for forcing or for summer use; remarkable for its beauty of foliage, solid golden head, tenderness and delicacy of flavor. Oz. 20 cts.
MUSK-MELONS.
Wilson’s. Winter Pineapple sort. When ripe the outside is of a rich yellow, intermingled with a light green, the yellow predominating on the lower half. The most remarkable and valuable feature of this new melon is its wonderful keeping quality ; they do not ripen on the vine, like other melons, but have to be picked before hard frost and laid away in a cool, dry cellar, where they will keep sound and sweet for months. When wanted for, use they must be brought into a warm room, where they will ripen in a few days. Pkt. ro cts.
Emerald Gem. Very early and prolific; smooth, ribbed, dark green skin; flesh orange, sweet and delicious. Oz. 15 cts., lb. $1.
PEAS. Cleveland’s Alaska. An extra early blue variety, of delicious flavor. The pods are of beautiful green color, long, and well filled with Peas; grows about 2% feet high. Qt. 25 cts. Heroine. This isa medium early, and grows uniformly from 2 to 2% feet high. It comes in between Advancer and Champion of England, and bears a profusion of large, long, slightly curved, pointed pods, containing g or to large Peas of the finest quality. Qt. 4o cts.
Potato, Pride of Ireland.
This new seedling originated with a successful potato-grower in Wisconsin, who says it is a late variety, a very good keeper, and cooks well; skin is very white, with a sort of light, russety netting; the flesh is white and of good quality. It cannot fail to satisfy the grower who wants a heavy yielder. Bus. $2, bbl. $4.50.
Pumpkin, Jonathan. This is one of the best crookneck varieties ever introduced. It is a good keeper, of large size, very prolific and wonderfully smooth and even fleshed, being free from that coarse stringi- ness which most varieties have. Oz. 10 cts.
RADISHES. Scarlet Globe. (Benary.) New; excellent for frame, and has short leaves; brilliant red; flesh fine, white, tender and crisp. Oz. 15 cts., lb. $1.25. Chinese Round Scarlet. A new short-top summer or winter-using variety. It grows of medium . size; flesh pure white, of mild flavor. Original pkt. 20 cts.
Salsify, Mammoth Sandwich Island.

Spinach, Long=-Standing.

Squash, Sibley, or Pike’s Peak.

GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR THE CULTIVATION OF ANNUAL, BIENNIAL, AND PERENNIAL FLOWERS.
Piants are known and described generally as Annuals, Biennials and Perennials.
Annuals are those plants that flower and mature their seed within a year after they are sown, andthen perish. This definition isin no waychanged by the fact that many annuals may be managed as biennials, or, in other words, be sown in autumn for flowering early the following season.
Tender Annuals are those that require heat, and will not germinate in the open ground until settled warm weather.
Half-Hardy Annuals are those which will beara slight frost, and may be sown in the open ground a little earlier than tender annuals.
Hardy Annuals are usually those which require no artificial heat during any period of their growth—every stage of their existence, from the time of sowing the seed to maturity, is passed in the open ground.
Biennials are those plants that flower the second, and sometimes the third year after the seed is sown, and then perish.
Perennials are those plants that live and perpetuate their species throughout many years successively.
The last two classes are again divided in respect to their endurance of low temperature, as - TENDER, HALF-HARDY or HARDY.
Tender Biennials and Perennials are greenhouse or dwelling-house plants requiring artifi- cial heat to protect them from frost.
Half-Hardy Biennials and Perennials are those that require a slight covering of straw or litter during cold weather.
Hardy Biennials and Perennials are those that w vill stand the coldest winter weather without protection.
Soils Most Suitable.—The soil best adapted to a majority of plants is a light, friable loam, containing a moderate quantity of vegetable matter, and enough sand to render it porous; but as it seldom happens that the amateur has a choice of soil, it is fortunate that most of them will suc- ceed in any but such as is of an extremely dry or gravelly nature, or of a stiff, heavypretentive quality.
Manures. The use of strong, crude manures should be carefully avoided. In ordinary good soil, an annual dressing of decomposed stable manure, dug in tothe depth of about ten inches, and thoroughly incorporated with the soil, will be all that is needed.
Time of Sowing. With regardto the proper time of sowing flower seeds, much neces- sarily dependson the character of the season. As a general rule (near New York City) hardy kinds may be sown inthe open ground about the middle of April, hal/-hardy during the first week of May, and tender after the middle of May.
The best method to obtain early fiowers is to sow seed of the most desirable tender and half hardy species in potsearly in March. If kept in a warm greenhouse or window, or plunged into a moderate hot-bed, they will be ready to transplant tothe open ground early i inMay. The sea- son of blooming will be made fully three weeks earlier thereby.
Mode of Sowing. Seeds may be sown in patches among the border plants in rows or groups where they are to remain, or in a nursery bed, and afterwards transplanted. Asa gen- eral rule, the surface soil should be rather dry than otherwise at the time of sowing ; the opera- tion must not be undertaken when the ground is very wet, especially at anearly period of spring.

The Depth at whichseeds should be sown will vary with their size. Large seeds, suchas Lupins, Marvel of Peru, or Sweet Peas, should be sown about half an inch deep; medium size seeds, such as Balsams, Convolvulus or Thunbergia, about a quarter of an inch deep; while such as are very small require to be sown on the actual surface, a slight pressure being then sufficient toimbed them to a proper depth. If sown too deep, they are longer in germinating, and the smaller ones are liable to decay through want of strength toopen the poresoftheearth. Inthe absence of rain, water the seeds occasionally from a watering-pot with a very fine rose.
Transplanting. Assoon as the seedlings are an inch high, they may be transplanted to different partsofthe garden. Removethe plants carefully with a small garden trowel, retaining as much of the soil to the roots as possible. Place the large growing kinds in the rear, and the smallin front ; aboveall things, avoid crowding them. Transplanting should, if possible, be per- formed in cloudy weather, or towards evening ; and, unless the soil is wet, the seedlings should be slightly watered, to settle the soil about the roots, shading them for a day or two afterwards, if necessary.
The Risk and Trouble of transplanting may be avoided by adopting the following method of sowing the seed: Take a package of say twenty varieties, and number the bags from one to twenty ; then sow a small circle from each bag in the order in which they are numbered, and in- sert a short stick in the center of eachcircle as a mark. By this method thetwenty varieties are distributed along the border in succession ; and as each bag will besufficient for about three cir- cles, or three assortments of twenty varieties each, they may be sown in three different aspects of the garden, which will not only give the various flowers the best possible chance with regard to exposure, but show the varieties tothe best possible advantage. By preserving the bags, the mere novice, by referring to the name and number on each, will become acquainted with the different varieties from the order in which they stand inthe garden. This system may be practiced to. advantage either on a large or small scale.
Neatness is indispensable ina flower garden, and neither the variety nor beauty of the plants. will compensate for its absence. As theplantsadvancein growth, frequent weeding and hoeing will be necessary, as well for the sake of neatness as to stimulate their growth. Tie the tall grow- ing kinds to neat rods or sticks, and train the vines or climbers on trellises, strings, or poles.
